One of my favorite hot sandwiches are monte cristos, so when I found this holiday-oriented recipe I was thrilled. This recipe is for eggnog monte cristo and is so good! I mean who doesn’t love eggnog? Also, ya know what? I just realized that, depending of the type of eggnog you use, this recipe could either be for everyone, or just for the adults… you know what I mean!

Normally, for a monte cristo, you would dunk your sandwich in a milk and egg mixture before cooking, but in this recipe instead you use eggnog mixed with nutmeg. So really, when you think about it, regular Monte Cristos are half way there already, so eggnog really is the next logical step… I’m not sure why I never thought of it myself!

It’s so creative and so simple, but gives the monte cristos a new holiday flavor and creativity that you will love! My daughter and I made these last week as a test and are such a perfect appetizer when served warm. This passed the test with flying colors, so We will be making this again come Christmas! They suggest that you sprinkle them with confectionery sugar and serve them with cranberry sauce and I would suggest it too. We used the sugar and sauce and it adds a great look and flavor to this dish.

Here’s what you need:

1 1/2 tablespoons dijon mustard
1 1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise
9 slices white sandwich bread
6 slices muenster or gouda cheese
6 slices oven-roasted turkey (leftover or deli-sliced)
6 slices baked ham (leftover or deli-sliced)
1/2 cup eggnog
Generous pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting (optional)
Cranberry sauce, for serving
